The activist/protestor wedge and the new policing bill

The reason for the criminalization of protests which might cause annoyance hinges on an aesthetic of law and order. It is primarily an attack of the Extinction rebellion protests, which are often unpopular with the public. An appeal is being made to public safety, the protestors are few, the regular public is larger. One would struggle to find a public demonstration looked at favorably by the general public, which is often the point. The public protest has been more representative of left-wing politics, unions, and anti-authoritarianism for an awfully long time. …

Fantasy political party. The patriots manage by the Donald, sponsored by Breitbart, star athletes Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley and featuring newcomer, Donnie Jr.

America has always been a two-part system but not these parties. Although the Federalists and Democratic-Republicans were equally as crazed on party polarisation, they show us of how parties can go from dominance to irrelevance. Yet the modern Democrats and Republicans can trace they roots back nearly 300 years. The New American Patriots will need to unseat Republicans, some in historic seats. But that’s not what Trump will be worrying about. …

What makes Wandavision worth talking about is almost purely its connection to the MCU. Or rather, the lack thereof. It’s hard to imagine any network picking up a show so self-indulgently nostaglic. With two episodes, very little has been set up over the over-arching story. Just some simple techniques for audience uncomfortability has been introduced. This all begs the question, who is this for?

If you’re young enough to enjoy the MCU, you’re too young to appreciate the references. I can see the humour playing to an older audience as well. But none of the jokes transcent the sitcom format…

The 2020 election was a game of two-halves. In the preceding weeks, we were quietly hopeful for a landslide victory, flipping of the senate and, for the first time, blue Texas. The election itself, still ongoing, was a far closer call than anyone wanted. Again, Trump had lulled the political elite and intelligentsia into underestimating his appeal. Without the election being called, Trump’s large turnout has confused many members of the left. Surely his poor handling of Covid and perpetually scandalous regime would not be something American’s wanted continued for four more years?

Many critics will blame pollsters for being…

2017, what a time. If this film came out in 2020, it would be too soon. Politically, there is a film. Substantively, there is not a lot to speak about. It’s a message important after the murder of George Floyd, it’s a brash tale of bland characters, so awful it’s a wonder any of them still speak to each other.

The message was mixed, good, but mixed. In the sense that police violence is outright terrifying. However, Sam Rockwell’s talent is wasted by a bad script. A racist who, symbolically, dies and comes back to life. As if all racists…
